Tooth Bonding in Calgary
Quick, Conservative Fixes for Small Imperfections
For small imperfections in your teeth, sometimes a little bonding can make a big difference. Buffalo Run Dental offers quick and effective tooth bonding to correct minor cosmetic issues and restore your confidence in your smile. Dental bonding is a procedure in which a tooth-coloured composite resin is applied to a tooth and hardened with a special curing light, ultimately “bonding” the material to the tooth. It’s one of the most straightforward and affordable cosmetic dental treatments available, and it’s great for making subtle changes to teeth without the need for more invasive procedures.

What Can Bonding Fix?
What can bonding fix?
Tooth bonding is quite versatile for minor dental flaws:
We can repair small chips or cracks in a tooth, rebuilding the missing part so it looks whole again.
Bonding can fill in small gaps or spaces between teeth (diastemas) without the need for braces, making the teeth look more evenly spaced.
It can cover spots or discolorations on a tooth that teeth whitening cannot improve, blending the colour with the rest of your teeth.
We can use bonding to change a tooth’s shape – for example, to make a shorter tooth match its neighbours or to make a mildly crooked tooth appear straighter.
Bonding can also be used to protect a portion of tooth root that has been exposed due to receding gums (and reduce sensitivity in that area).
Benefits of Dental Bonding
Quick results
Non-invasive
Non-invasive: In most bonding cases, little to no tooth enamel needs to be removed. We typically lightly roughen or etch the surface to improve resin adhesion. This means no drilling into the tooth structure in many instances and often no need for anesthesia. It’s a painless process.
Natural appearance
Natural appearance: We select a composite resin shade that closely matches your natural tooth colour, so the bonded area blends in. Our dentist carefully sculpts the material to match your tooth’s shape and texture, making the repair virtually unnoticeable. No one will know you had a chip or gap there.
Cost-effective
Cost-effective: Bonding is one of the most affordable cosmetic dental treatments. If you’re on a budget or not ready for more extensive cosmetic work, such as veneers, bonding can deliver noticeable improvements at a fraction of the cost.
Boosts confidence
Boosts confidence: By fixing those little imperfections that have been bothering you – a chip here, a slight gap there – bonding can significantly enhance the overall look of your smile. You may find yourself smiling more often once those flaws are gone, which can positively impact your social and professional life.
How the Bonding Process Works
How the bonding process works: First, our dentist will discuss your goals and make sure bonding is a good option for the issue at hand. If you have decay or other underlying issues, they need to be addressed first (bonding can sometimes be used to fill small cavities on front teeth, serving as both a filling and a cosmetic fix). Once we’re ready to proceed, we pick the composite resin colour that matches your tooth. The tooth surface is prepared by etching it with a mild acidic gel, which creates tiny rough areas that help the bonding material adhere to the tooth. We then apply a conditioning liquid.
Next, the putty-like composite resin is applied to your tooth in layers. The dentist artistically moulds and shapes the resin to the desired form – whether it’s filling a chip, lengthening a tooth edge, or covering a spot. Once the shape looks just right, we shine a special blue curing light on the resin. This light hardens the material within seconds. We may add a few layers, hardening each one, to achieve the required material thickness. After hardening, we trim any excess and polish the bonded area to a smooth, lustrous finish so it matches the sheen of your natural enamel.
When done, the bonded tooth is ready for regular use immediately. There’s typically no adjustment period – it should feel natural in your mouth. Bonded areas are strong, but keep in mind that they’re not as strong as natural enamel against very heavy forces. Avoid biting your fingernails, chewing on ice, or using your teeth to open packages (which you shouldn’t do with natural teeth either!). Also, while our resin is resistant to staining, it can become slightly stained over time, especially if you consume a lot of coffee or tobacco; regular cleanings will help maintain its colour.
