The Veneer Process
The veneer process: Getting veneers typically requires two visits after the initial examination. First, you’ll meet with our dentist to discuss your smile goals. We will examine your teeth to ensure veneers are appropriate for you (for instance, your teeth and gums need to be healthy first, as veneers go on healthy teeth). We may take photographs or make study models of your teeth, and together we’ll plan the changes you desire – whether it’s closing a gap, lengthening a tooth, or making all your front teeth a uniform colour and shape.
At the preparation appointment, we gently prep the teeth. This involves removing a very thin layer of enamel from the front and sides of the teeth getting veneers. This step is done so that when the veneers are placed, they sit flush and natural, not bulky. We then take a precise impression or digital scan of your prepared teeth. This is sent to our partnered dental lab where skilled ceramists will fabricate your custom veneers out of high-quality porcelain. The fabrication process typically takes a couple of weeks. Before you leave the prep appointment, we place temporary veneers on your teeth to protect them and give you a preview of the expected look (temporaries are not as polished as the finals, but they look nice enough for you to carry on with daily life).
When your porcelain veneers are ready, you return for the second appointment: the placement. We remove the temporaries and clean your teeth. Each veneer is tried in to check the fit and aesthetics. We make sure you love the shape and shade, and that everything looks natural and beautiful. Once you and the dentist are satisfied, we proceed to bond the veneers. We use a special dental cement and a curing light to attach each veneer securely to your tooth’s front surface. We then clean off any excess cement, check your bite, and polish the edges for a seamless feel. You’ll leave this appointment with your brand-new smile!
Taking care of veneers is simple: brush and floss daily and avoid using your veneered teeth as tools to open packages or bite extremely hard objects (just as you would protect your natural teeth). While porcelain is very strong, excessive force can still crack it. We might also recommend a night guard if you grind your teeth at night, to protect your veneers (and your other teeth, too). Regular dental checkups are important so we can keep your gums and teeth healthy around the veneers.
